If the modem still does not dial out, and the phone line was correctly plugged in, get a telephone and plug it into the phone jack on the modem. Check for a dial tone on the telephone.

If there is no dial tone, there is a problem with the phone line. Call your telephone service provider and report the problem. You need to find a line that will give you a dial tone and do the following:

  1. At the DOS prompt type: SET <Enter>. This will list the DOS environment variables. Look for TID, if found check the last digit. This is the com port Bookstore Manager will try to use for the modem. (If there is no TID, then check line 217 in the SYS Config File for the com port.)
  2. At the DOS prompt type: ECHO ATDT xxxxxxx > comY <Enter>, where x=a dummy phone # and Y=com port. If the modem dials out, then the com port is correct. If it does not dial, try the echo command with a different port. Valid options are 1,2,3, or 4.

Repeat step 2 until the modem dials out or all valid options have been tried.

If the modem dials out, then change the last digit in the SET TID line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to the com port value used in the successful dial out attempt.

If there is a dial tone, but you have tried all all 4 com ports without getting the modem to dial out, repeat step #2 except instead of typing the echo.... line at the DOS prompt, go into Bookstore Manager and attempt a stock check or other communication program.

If the program gets past the Initializing Modem message then change the last digit in the SET TID line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to the com port value used in the last set TID you typed at the DOS prompt. If the program failed at a different point in the program with a different message return to troubleshooting for modems and troubleshoot that error after you have made the change to your TID in the AUTOEXEC.BAT.
